The effect of different carboxylic acids on ice nucleation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Certain organic compounds have the potential to effectively alter water ice nucleation. Research data of those organic compounds that may affect ice formation in the atmopshere is still insufficient. Among those interesting compounds are the carboxylic acids which are present in the atmosphere due to different reasons. They are formed through ozonolysis of unsaturated organic compounds and are also a major fraction in the humic like substances (HULIS).

Laboratory studies on carboxylic acids and their interaction with ice nucleation
For the formation of clouds aerosol particles play an important role. But not all particles influence the cloud nucleation in the same way. This arises from the fact that the atmosphere holds many different types of aerosol particles. In the upper troposphere the main part of the aerosol is composed of inorganic materials as mineral dust, but also biologic materials, soot and other carbonaceous...
متن کاملEffect of Various Carboxylic Acids on the Biosynthesis of Polyhydroxyalkanoate in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA01
In the present study, four carbon sources were tested for the polyester synthesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA01 which is a ubiquitous environmental bacterium and is one of the top three causes of opportunistic human infections. These included linear C8 to C11 carboxylic acids. Octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid and undecanoic acid were added to M1 ...
متن کاملProduction of Ice Nucleation Deficient (Ice-) Mutants of the Epiphytic Strains of Erwinia herbicola
To mutate the Ice Nucleation Active (INA) gene in Erwinia herbicola strains, Tn-5 transposon carried by Psup2021 plasmid was used. This plasmid was transferred to the bacterial cells by electroporation. Electrotransformation was carried out for 2.5 ms at 1800 v and 1 mm distance between the electrodes. Polymerase chain reaction was used for determination of presence or loss of INA gene, using a...
متن کاملExpected nucleation effects of carboxylic acid salts on poly(1-butene)
9,10-Dihydro-9,10-ethano-anthracene-11,12-dicarboxylic acid disodium salt (DHEAS) was synthesized and used as a nucleating agent for poly(1-butene) (iPB). The isothermal crystallization kinetics of iPB having different nucleating agents were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The results showed that the nucleating agents increased the...
متن کاملQuantum mechanics investigation of acid dissociation constant of carboxylic acids in aqueous solution
According to the Bronsted definition, any compound which has a hydrogen atom is an acid, since itmay be lost as a proton. A thermodynamical cycle is proposed to calculate absolute pKa values forBronsted acids in aqueous solution. The equilibrium of dissociation of a Bronsted acid depends onthe interaction of the acid and its conjugate base with solvent molecules. There fore the pKa valuedepends...
